Traditionally, the interiorized discourse is understood as a model of cognitive and emotional perception and development of the subject’s world, which has been created by the author of the text. The linguistic and psychological criterion for distinguishing the interiorized discourse is egocentricity, i.e., the subject’s expression is aimed at himself/herself. The inner world of the character is revealed through inner speech, dreams and memories.

N. Butsykina considers inner speech to be a process and a product of speech and mental activity of the subject of consciousness, reproduced with the help of language expressive means in the text [1, p. 51].

We have already referred to interior monologue as a verbalization of the interiorized discourse [2]. Along with the interior monologue, there is another form of the internal language of the character –  the interior dialogue, “which is a sequence of dialogically interconnected statements that are generated by the speaker and, directly, perceived by him/her in the process of intrapersonal communication. In contrast to the interior monologue, the interior dialogue appears as an extroverted communicative act, i.e. directed outwards, to establish and maintain linguistic intersubjective contact” [3]. Interior dialogical activity is vied as “engagement in dialogue with imagined figures, the simulation of social dialogical relationships in one’s own thoughts, and the mutual confrontation of the points of view representing different I-positions relevant to personal and/or social identity” [4, p. 242].

Interior dialogue, thus, is a character’s reproduction of various semantic positions interacting with each other in a certain way. Let’s illustrate it with an example: “Why am I so cynical? The world’s full of rotten parents. It’s not as though mine were marvelous. I left home as soon as I could! And it might partly explain why he’s so odd” [5, p. 8]. In this text fragment we observe five simple sentences, among which we can find one interrogative and one exclamatory sentences. Moreover, there are contracted forms of verb tense forms as the signs of the conversational style. However, the evaluation of the situation, or rather the intention of the main character of the story “Instinct”, Sally, to compare the actions of Mr. Wilde’s parents and her own, is conveyed verbally with the help of the modal verbs could and might, on the one hand, and adjectives with negative semantics – rotten and odd, on the other hand. We should also add that Mr. Wilde’s strange behaviour has always alarmed Sally, that is, her inner speech is aimed at “completing” his image in a certain sense, at least for herself.

Represented speech is a synthesis of the author and the character’s speech. Represented speech seems to “dress up” in the author’s speech and is reproduced in its forms [6]. When represented speech is a part of the author’s monologue, it gives the story emotional and expressive colouring, on the one hand, and on the other hand, it contributes to the condensation of information and, as a result, reality is reflected in various images that are created in the character’s head: “Consuelo has always regarded herself as a fortunate woman.  Just look at my life, she’d say, if anyone asked her.  She’s spent her seventy years living in the same corner of the same Spanish city.  Let other people roam the world, she thinks, if she catches a travel documentary on television.  Let other people rush off to China or Africa and deal with danger and uncertainty.  Is there anything wrong with being a person who thrives on routine and familiarity?” [7, p. 1]. This is a text fragment from the story “Angel”, its first paragraph. Italics (the author’s remarks) present the inner thoughts of the main character, who is sure that her life, so routine, cannot be compared to the life of those who roam the world, facing danger and uncertainty.
